Distinctive Features
The name ‘Pteranodon’ means ‘winged but toothless,’ reflecting its most notable characteristic. Among pterosaurs, it is one of the best known.
Adaptations for Coastal Life
Pteranodons primarily lived along coastal cliffs, making long flights over the ocean to catch fish. Fossil evidence suggests that these reptiles could travel over 100 kilometers from shore to hunt their prey. Despite lacking teeth, their long, pointed beak allowed them to capture fish with ease.
Lightweight Skull and Short Tail
Without the need for strong jaw muscles, Pteranodons had relatively lightweight skulls. Unlike the long-tailed Rhamphorhynchoids, Pterodactyloids like Pteranodon had minimal or absent tails. Instead, they possessed a crest protruding from the back of the skull, which could be as long as half the head’s length.
Purpose of the Crest
The crest was larger in males than females and is believed to have served several functions, such as stabilizing the animal in flight, helping with balance, and potentially playing a role in mating displays.
Expert Flyers and Fish Hunters
Pteranodons had keen eyesight, which allowed them to spot fish from above the ocean’s surface. They would glide near the water and use their elongated beak to snatch fish close to the surface, making them highly efficient hunters in their environment.
