Biden and Trump Secure Key Early Wins in 2024 US Election Primaries

Biden Wins Symbolic Victory in New Hampshire Despite Official Boycott

On January 23, President Joe Biden secured a symbolic win in New Hampshire's Democratic primary with 63.9% of the vote, despite not actively participating in the race. Initially, the Democratic National Committee (DNC) had designated South Carolina as the first official primary to be held on February 3, but New Hampshire, which mandates by state law that it holds the nation’s first primary, defied the DNC and went ahead with its own vote.
Biden supporters took matters into their own hands by writing in his name on the ballot. However, the DNC has stated that it will not officially recognize the New Hampshire results. Just over a week later, Biden went on to dominate the South Carolina primary on February 3, achieving a decisive 96% of the vote, confirming a strong start to his re-election campaign.

Trump Solidifies Republican Front-Runner Status with Back-to-Back Wins

In the Republican race, former President Donald Trump emerged as the clear front-runner. During the Iowa caucuses on January 15, Trump received 51% of the vote, outperforming his nearest competitor, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, who garnered 21.2%. Trump extended his lead with a second consecutive victory in New Hampshire on January 23.
Although New Hampshire only represents 22 delegates—less than 1% of the total needed to secure the Republican nomination—this race marked a crucial moment. It was the first major face-off after the GOP contest narrowed to a two-person race between Trump and former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley, drawing significant attention to Trump’s ongoing momentum.
